Apostasy "Death Return" - Recenzja/Review

    Trzy lata temu mierzyłem się z albumem "The Sign of Darkness", pierwszym pełnym albumie po blisko dwóch dekadach nieobecności na scenie. W tamtej recenzji narzekałem trochę na jakość EP, za to trochę poklepałem po plecach za pełny album. Mierząc się z "Death Return" postanowiłem powrócić do dyskografii tych chilijskich thrasherów by mieć dobre porównanie. Lecz po pierwszym odsłuchaniu najnowszego dzieła Apostasy zrozumiałem, że było to zbędne.

    Ciężko nie odnieść wrażenia, że chłopaki sami do końca jeszcze nie wiedzą co chcą dokładnie robić. Przez prawie 40 minut, bo na tyle się składa najnowsza płyta, otrzymujemy naprawdę różne oblicza thrashu. Przy "The Sign of Darkness" moim największym mankamentem był brak konsekwencji w porównaniu z pierwszymi wydawnictwami. Lata minęły, skład również prawie w całości zmieniony i mogło być to następstwo ewolucji zespołu. Z początku grali bardzo surowy i najszpetniejszy jaki się dało thrash metal z domieszką black metalu. Było to coś, co mnie porwało i nadal uważam, że jeśli ktoś nie posiada wznowień, warto uderzyć do Fallen Temple i się zaopatrzyć. Po powrocie zespołu na scenę już niebezpiecznie zboczył on do jakiejś mieszanki thrashu z speed metalem. Coś co mnie bardzo rzadko przekonuje i wtedy było podobnie. Było co pochwalić, ale za często nie wracałem. "Death Return" całe szczęście pozbył się tej bezpłciowości. Dostajemy agresywny i soczysty black/thrash, ale nie taki do szpiku kości. Bardzo, bardzo dojrzał przez te trzy lata. Choć niestety nadal nie wybrał sobie konkretnego kierunku. Na start dostajemy tytułowy utwór, który mógłby tak naprawdę zamykać płytę. Świetna robota, intro nie nużące a podbudowujące klimat. Muzyka agresywna, ale stonowana, zachrypły wokal bez jakiś specjalnych udziwnień i zdecydowanie więcej blacku w tym wszystkim. Przestało być to zwykłą muzyką nadającą się do piwa, teraz zachęca do ponownych odsłuchów. Im dalej w las, tym więcej pomysłów. Są utwory dużo szybsze jak "Jus Primae Noctis", są takie, które wprowadzają niemal w trans jak fenomenalny "Obey the Antichrist", czy serwuje godne pochwały solówki w "The Great Apostasy". Perkusja ponownie na wysokim poziomie, coś co bardzo lubię i doceniam. Natomiast nie doceniam tej niejednolitości w wokalu. Raz jest zachrypły, raz bardziej stonowany, a zdarzyło się nawet, że wychodzi z gardłowej konwencji i zaczyna śpiewać normalnie w takim fragmencie, że można by było równie dobrze wpierdolić akustyka jak w tanim folku. Na szczęście to są jednorazowe sytuacje, jak na i tak całkiem długą płytę. Cris Profaner ma naprawdę porządny i dojrzały wokal i ma tutaj świetną próbę mieszania black/thrashu. Nie widzę sensu by to udziwniać.

    Przy poprzedniku pisałem, że żadnej rewolucji nie wywoła, po tym albumie widzę na to potencjał. Nie ukrywam, że ciekawi mnie w jaki sposób podejdą do tematu przy kolejnych wydawnictwach i życzę im większej konsekwencji przy następnych. Jeśli zaś chodzi o "Death Return", bez obaw mogę polecić, porządny album, zdecydowanie poprzeczkę wyżej niż "The Sign of Darkness".

    Three years ago I faced the album "The Sign of Darkness", the first full album after nearly two decades of absence of Apostasy on stage. In that review I complained a bit about the quality of the EP, but I slapped them on the back for making a full album, too. Facing "Death Return" I decided to go back to the discography of these Chilean thrashers to make a good comparison. But after listening to the latest work of Apostasy for the first time, I realized it was unnecessary.

    It's hard not to get the impression that the guys don’t know exactly what they want to do. For almost 40 minutes, because that's how long it lasts, we get really different faces of thrash. With "The Sign of Darkness" my biggest drawback was the lack of consistency in comparison to the first releases. Years have passed, the line-up has also changed completely and it may have been a consequence of the band's evolution. At the beginning they played very raw and ugly thrash metal with a hint of black metal. It was catchy and I still think that if someone doesn't own any renewals, it's worth hitting Fallen Temple and stocking up. After the band returned to the stage, they already dangerously diverted to some mix of thrash and speed metal. There was much to praise, but I was not coming back to it very often. Fortunately, “Death Return” got rid of this ordinariness. We got aggressive and juicy black / thrash, but not black to the bone. They have matured a lot in the last three years. Although, unfortunately, they still haven't chosen a specific direction. At the start we get the title track, which could actually be the last track on that album. Great job, the intro is not boring, but enhances the atmosphere a lot. The music is aggressive, but a bit muted. Hoarse vocals without any unnecessary additions and definitely more black in it all. It’s no longer music suitable only for sitting and drinking beer. Now it encourages you to listen to it again with attention. The further you go, the more ideas appear. There are songs much faster like "Jus Primae Noctis", and those that put you almost into a trance like the phenomenal "Obey the Antichrist", or serve commendable solos like in "The Great Apostasy". Drums again at a high level, something I really like and appreciate. However, I don’t appreciate the diversity of the vocals. Sometimes it’s hoarse, sometimes it’s more neutral or throaty that you could just as well add some fucking acoustics as you do in cheap folk. Luckily, these are one-time situations for an already pretty long record. Cris Profaner has really decent and mature vocals and mixes black and trash very well here. It doesn't make any sense to make it weirder.

    I wrote about the previous album that it wouldn’t cause any revolution, but after this album I see potential for it. I must admit that I am interested in how they’ll approach the subject in the next releases and I wish them more consistency in the next ones. When it comes to "Death Return", I can recommend this decent album without hesitation, which definitely sets a bar higher than "The Sign of Darkness".
